Raising awareness

Glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy alone cause nearly 20% of all blindness in New Zealand. These are both treatable conditions if detected early.
Early detection

The detection of “lazy eyes” (amblyopia) or other ocular problems in childhood is essential so that early treatment can be initiated and poor sight for life prevented.
Preventing injuries

Many serious ocular injuries occur in the home, on the sports field, and in the workplace. They affect all age groups and are mostly preventable.
Promoting research

The Save Sight Society has set up a research fund and grants will be made from this fund to New Zealanders working in the field of eye research.
Improving access

The Society aims to ensure that advances in eye treatments become available to all, and that people with incurable eye diseases have access to support throughout New Zealand.

Help Us Support Eye Research

Funding for grants comes from donations from the public, New Zealand Ophthalmologists, The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, and suppliers of ophthalmic equipment. The fund is still small, and contributions to help grow this fund to achieve our minimum target of one million dollars are urgently required.

Over $700,000 in grants have been awarded since 2003 to ophthalmologists, trainee ophthalmologists, and University Departments of Ophthalmology. These grants have been awarded as part of the Save Sight Society's long term commitment to research.

In 1966 a group of New Zealand Ophthalmologists formed the New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Blindness, and recently the name was changed to the Save Sight Society.
